  • Kinetic Typography

A friend at work showed me a couple of videos in youtube that were interesting. All of them were movie clips, but instead of seeing the film, the action was replaced with text showing the dialog.

This technique is called “Kinetic Typography” or “Motion Typography”. This text is presented over time in a manner intended to convey or evoke a particular idea or emotion. It is often studied in Communication Design and Interaction Design courses. Some commonly seen examples of this technique include movie title sequences and credits, web page animation and other entertainment media.

What is interesting that right now we use fancy programs like Adobe Flash, Apple Motion or Adobe After Effects to do this, but this technique was used as early as 1899 by George Melies. In his case it was static text that was transformed using cinematic transitions.

Scholars recognize the first feature film to extensively use kinetic typography as Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959). This film’s opening title sequence—created by Saul Bass—contained animated text, featuring credits that “flew” in from off-screen, and finally faded out into the film itself. A similar technique was also employed by Bass in Psycho (1960).
