  • It’s Helium baby, yeah!

We all played around with balloons filled with helium because we realized that changes the tone of our voice. A couple of years ago some friends and I got together to play and the results where hilarious.

So the question is why does this happen? The answer is actually pretty simple. When you talk, air travels out of your lungs and past your vocal chords causing these flaps of tissue in your throat and the air around them to vibrate. Those vibrating air molecules generate the sound waves you form into words. If you inhale helium instead of air, the sound waves you produce will travel much faster through this less dense gas. That amplifies sound waves with a higher frequency (vibrations per second) making your voice sound like Mickey Mouse’s. It may seem like fun, but filling your lungs with helium can be dangerous: The lack of oxygen could cause you to lose consciousness.

So there you go boys and girls. Go to a birthday party, get all the balloons you can find and have fun like we did!
