  • Howard Hughes, the filmaker

We have heard from him many many times. There is even a really good movie about him and his passion for aviation (The Aviator with Leonardo Di Caprio).
Today I want to tell and show a little about his other passion: filmaking.

Howard moved to Los Angeles in 1925 with his mind set to make a name for himself making movies. His first movie was released in 1927 and it was called “Everybody’s Acting” and it was a financial success. His second movie was also a great success that got him an Academy Award for Best Director of a comedy. The Movie was “Two Arabian Knights”.

After those two big hits, he decided to join both his passions and did a movie about planes, “Hell’s Angels” was a super production for that time, with a great budget of $3.8 Million dollars. Here is a sample of it:

In 1932 he did another hit called “Scarface: The Shame of the Nation”. The first version of the film (Version A) was completed on September 8, 1931, but censors would not allow its release until 1932, because of concerns that it glorified the gangster lifestyle and showed too much violence. Several scenes had to be edited, the subtitle “The Shame of the Nation” as well as a text introduction had to be added, and the ending had to be modified. However, this version still didn’t pass some censors, so Howard Hughes disowned this version and released the original in the states that lacked the strict censors.

More to come on Howard Hughes and his passion for airplanes.
