  • Canon shows how it gets done

A few months ago, precisely on September 17th 2008, Canon presented their new DSLR EOS 5D Mark II. When the presentation was over it was clear that Canon just put every other DSLR manufacturer in shame. Their camera is just great. It has a 21.1 Megapixel Full Frame, that means that it works like a regular 35mm camera and it is capable of shooting Full HD video.

I will get into the Full HD video thing in a minute since it is simply spectacular. But first what does Full Frame means? It means that the size of the CMOS sensor is the same size as the 35mm cameras. So images don’t need any kind of hardware extrapolation to replicate reality. It also means that wide-angle lenses stay wide, without the change in angle of view associated with smaller sensor cameras.

So back to the Full HD since it is the first and only DSLR to shoot video. Somehow Canon managed to get this done in a great way. It is a result of their amazing and powerful chip, the DIGIC 4 processor. It was so fast in continuous bursts that they enabled live video!

So, as part of their marketing campaign, they gave one of this babies to Vincent Laforet, a professional photographer and he shot this amazing video.

But then what happens when a regular guy picks it up and decides to do a video? It looks like professional cinematographer.

Finally Canon priced it relatively cheap at U$D2,700 for the body. So we will see a lot of wannabees around!
