MTV launched in August 1, 1981. The original porpuse was to play music videos that were introduced by VJs. At some point down the line, MTV lost its track and started with shows as Real Life, Cribs and some other reality tv shows down turned them away from their original purpose.
On August 1, 1981, at 12:01 a.m., MTV: Music Television launched with the words “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll,” spoken by John Lack. Those words were immediately followed by the original MTV theme song, a crunching guitar riff written by Jonathan Elias and John Petersen, playing over a montage of the Apollo 11 moon landing. MTV producers Alan Goodman and Fred Seibert used this public domain footage as a conceit, associating MTV with the most famous moment in world television history
Appropriately, the first music video shown on MTV was “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles. The second video shown was Pat Benatar’s “You Better Run”. Sporadically, the screen would go black when an employee at MTV inserted a tape into a VCR
Luckily MTV decided to get it right and they launched MTV Music where they have ALL the music videos they have ever showed.
The site is very clean and organized and you can browse by artist, search or use one of their categories. Now to the fun part! Here are some videos that I like a lot.
Their first video ever…
Dire Straits – Money for Nothing
And their second…
Aerosmith & Run D.M.C – Walk this way
Michael Jackson – Thriller (Long Vers.)
